A Letter to Levent is Simon Leleux's first solo album. It marks a significant milestone in his study of the doholla, a bass darbuka originating from Egypt.

This work is dedicated to Levent Yildirim, pioneer in this instrument modern techniques. It is also a heartfelt tribute to the student-master relationship and transfer of knowledge; when the teachings go beyond mastering an instrument but also become stepping stones to life choices, a philosophy or an artistic identity...
Improvisation is omnipresent throughout, emphasizing minimalist, spontaneous, intimate and direct pieces.

In this album, the doholla is displayed free from its traditional context. Simon Leleux has a broad approach, driven by human encounters that inspired him through their music and stories. The identity and cultures related questions are key. If the darbuka has typical arabic overtones, the tombak is instantly associated with persian culture, the Tabla with India, the djembe with Africa or the congas with Cuba.... Here, the doholla creates bridges between far apart colours, draped with an ungraspable and mysterious vibe.

Mirroring this concept, Simon Leleux does not try to convey or channel a unique repertoire and genre. He's freed himself from any role imposed on him by a certain music tradition or ideological straightjacket. The confluence of varied cultures enriches his work contemporary approach.

Letter to Levent est le premier album solo de Simon Leleux. Il marque une étape dans sa recherche personnelle autour du doholla, cet instrument originaire d'Égypte aussi appelé darbuka basse.

C'est un hommage à son maître Levent Yildirim, pionnier du jeu moderne de cet instrument. C’est aussi un hommage à la transmission maître-élève, quand l'enseignement dépasse la simple pratique artistique pour devenir le reflet de choix de vie, d'une philosophie, d’une identité de l’artiste. L'improvisation est ainsi omniprésente, les morceaux minimalistes, spontanés, intimes, directs.

Simon Leleux présente le doholla en le sortant au maximum de son contexte traditionnel. Sa démarche est globale, dirigée vers la rencontre des personnes et, à travers elles, de leur musique et de leurs récits. La question identitaire est omniprésente : la darbuka est typée arabe, le tombak est typé persan, les tablas, indiens, le djembé, africain, les congas, cubains... Le doholla crée des ponts entre tous ces univers, tout en restant mystérieux et inconnu.

A l’instar de son instrument, Simon Leleux ne se positionne pas comme ambassadeur d'un répertoire ou d’une culture. Comme le doholla qui s’est affranchi de la place qu’on lui a imposée en musique, Simon s’émancipe des répertoires et des carcans normatifs. Une approche contemporaine, inspirée de ses influences et rencontres avec des musiciens de tous bords.

Letter to Levent is het eerste soloalbum van Simon Leleux. Het is het sluitstuk van een fase in zijn hoogst persoonlijk onderzoek rond de doholla, een van oorsprong Egyptisch percussie instrument, ook wel basdarbuka genoemd. Het album is een ode aan zijn meester Levent Yildirim, dé pionier van de hedendaagse speelstijl op dit instrument. Het is ook een ode aan de meester-leerling relatie, waarbij de overdracht verder gaat dan artistieke training en een weerspiegeling wordt van levenskeuzes, van een filosofie en een artistieke persoonlijkheid. Zo is op dit album improvisatie alomtegenwoordig, zijn de stukken minimalistisch, spontaan, intiem en direct.

Simon Leleux stelt de doholla voor in heel zijn rijkdom terwijl hij hem zo ver mogelijk uit zijn traditionele context vandaan haalt. Zijn benadering is globaal, gericht op ontmoeting met mensen en, via hen, met hun muziek en hun verhaal. Zijn werk baadt in een identitair vraagstuk: darbuka is a typisch Arabisch, tombak typisch Perzisch, tabla Indisch, djembe Afrikaans, conga Cubaans ... De doholla slaat, deels dankzij zijn relatieve onbekendheid, bruggen tussen die verschillende universa zonder aan mysterie in te boeten.

Als evenbeeld van zijn instrument, positioneert Simon Leleux zich niet als vertegenwoordiger van een bepaalde cultuur of repertoire. Zoals de doholla zich geëmancipeerd heeft van de rol die hem toegewezen was in de muziek, zo heeft ook Simon zich bevrijdt van het repertoire en de normatieve boeien. Het is een hedendaagse benadering, gevoed en geïnspireerd door zijn vele invloeden en ontmoetingen met muzikanten van alle slag.
